Statement from the Candidate
During 30+ years in corporate American and years running the family farm, I have learned and developed skills that can be leveraged to help the local community and New Hampshire.
Problem Solving
I had the pleasure of working with Jim Bird at Texas Instruments for many years. He knows that methodical thinking and problem solving are critical to good decision making.
Whether as the manager of finance and operations for a $3 billion-dollar semiconductor business, a mechanical engineer, a Director of the Board of Trustees of a neighborhood school, or an entrepreneur managing a farm, I am always solving problems. Because I take ownership and responsibility for the results, I’m constantly thinking through possible outcomes and the consequences of those outcomes in order to make the best decisions possible.
As a NH state representative, I would use my experience in problem solving to work with other representatives and community members to resolve the issues in our state and make New Hampshire a better home for all of us.

Listening
I start the decision-making process by asking questions. By listening and learning, I can gather the data I need to analyze what needs to be done. This is what I did, for example, when I moved my family to Oslo, Norway for three years to manage the integration of a high tech start up. I took in as much as I could about the local culture, the company culture, the talents of my co-workers, the product we were trying to sell, what people loved about their work, and what the problems were that we needed to solve. Then I set out to protect the things that people cared about and to overcome the obstacles that faced us as a team.
It’s also what I do when I get a new boss. I carefully listen and learn about his or her expectations and goals, and then I set out to solve problems and overcome obstacles in order to meet and exceed those expectations and achieve those goals.
I look at representing you in the New Hampshire State House this same way. As your representative, you would be my new boss. To do my best to work for you, I want to listen and understand your expectations, goals, needs, and hopes. This summer I have been going door to door, asking the neighbors what’s on their minds. What worries them, what is working in our community, and what needs fixing. I also have a survey on this website to gather information from our fellow community members that I hope you’ll fill out. Right now I’m gathering data so we can protect what you care about and overcome the obstacles that we are facing as a community.

Sound Judgement
Decisions have to be made. Sometimes you have all the information you need and plenty of time to make the right decision. Most often you don’t. That’s when good decision-making skills count the most.
I have had a career of making decisions and being held accountable for them. I had to balance budgets; there was no additional money. I had to meet deadlines; the customer could always go elsewhere for their needs. I had to attract, keep, and develop teams of talented people; such people can work anywhere they chose. I had to evaluate all the different options, understand other people’s perspectives, and constantly try to make decisions that had the best outcome for everyone involved. When you make hundreds of decisions a day, and have to live with your results, you get good at decision making; you develop good judgment. That’s what I want to bring to you as your representative.

Experience
I’m a Mechanical Engineer with an MBA. I have extensive finance, accounting, budget planning, and operational experience that equips me to understand the operational, tax and spending decisions that face the state. My work has taken me all over the country and all over the world, but the importance of building relationships remains the same everywhere. I understand the need to invest in people and work with them to meet goals that serve everyone. As a small business owner of a farm, I’ve had to work with government agencies on soil management, licensing, and tax issues, so I understand the kind of business climate that attracts new jobs. As a trustee of a local parochial school, I have worked hard to ensure families a high quality education in a loving environment on a tight budget.
I understand the perspectives of those in corporate, business, government, and school settings. I have seen how companies, governments, and schools have been run across the country and the world. These are the experiences that have prepared me to serve you.
